Moringa pods come from the Moringa oleifera, a fast-growing tree widely cultivated in tropical and subtropical regions.
They are long, slender, and slightly ribbed seed pods—often reaching 20–50 cm (8–20 inches) in length. When young, the pods are bright green, tender, and flexible, with a smooth outer skin. As they mature, they become tougher, fibrous, and turn brown, eventually splitting open to release round seeds.
In culinary use, immature moringa pods are valued for their mild, slightly sweet, and earthy flavor, somewhat similar to green beans or asparagus. They are especially popular in South Asian cuisine, where they’re commonly added to curries and stews like sambar.
Nutritionally, moringa pods are a good source of vitamin C, dietary fiber, and minerals such as calcium and potassium. Beyond food, they’re also recognized in traditional medicine for their potential antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties.
