Longan (Dimocarpus longan) is a small evergreen tree fruit in the soapberry family, native to southern Asia. The fruit is small, round to oval with a thin tan shell, translucent juicy white flesh (aril) and a single dark seed. Its flavor is sweet and mildly floral, similar to but less aromatic than lychee. Eaten fresh, dried, or canned, longan is used in desserts, drinks and traditional medicines. It’s seasonal (late summer–autumn), provides vitamin C and sugars, and fresh fruit stores briefly while drying or canning extends shelf life.
- Nutrition: Low in fat, moderate carbohydrates (natural sugars), source of vitamin C, some B vitamins, potassium and small amounts of minerals and antioxidants.
- Storage: Fresh longans store briefly (several days to 1–2 weeks refrigerated). Canning and drying extend shelf life substantially.
